Photo: Avi Ohayon/Israel Gpo/Zuma PressThe White House said Tuesday that Hamas and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad are using hospitals in Gaza, including Al-Shifa, for their operations but the U.S. remains opposed to Israel conducting airstrikes against the besieged hospital. John Kirby, a spokesman for the National Security Council, told reporters traveling aboard Air Force One that Hamas and Islamic Jihad “use some hospitals in the Gaza Strip, including Al-Shifa and tunnels underneath them, to conceal and to support their military operations and to hold hostages.” Kirby’s comments represented the first time the U.S. has said that Hamas is operating out of the hospitals.
